CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
A Proud Tradition of Excellence

Curriculum Overview

What subjects are included in CWLA’s curriculum?

We teach all of the core subjects and more. However, we also keep in mind that language is fundamental to every subject. It is one thing to teach a child the mechanics of reading. It is quite another to teach a child to comprehend a variety of subject matter. Reading is one of the threads that tie all academic study together. Learning takes place when the student understands how to read a literature book, how to read a math book, how to read a history book, etc…

Basic subjects

Basic subjects include Reading, Writing, Spelling, Mathematics, Science, History, Bible, Foreign Languages (including Latin, other languages being considered are Spanish, Greek, and Mandarin). The current Specials that we offer are Art, Music, P.E., Latin, and Leadership.

Leadership Emphasis

Because of CWLA's commitment to developing leaders, various aspects of leadership are woven into our curriculum in age-appropriate ways. For example, to facilitate public speaking skills, a kindergarten student may be asked to say their name into a microphone and recite a memory verse. Whereas, a high school assignment might involve participating in a mock trial and presenting a case to a mock judge and jury. Starting in kindergarten, all students participate in our annual CWLA Oratory Competition. Our uniform policy also reflects CWLA's commitment to train students for future leadership positions. From kindergarten on, students will be expected to arrive at school in their uniforms and well-groomed. Etiquette training, image management, and professional presentation are all built into CWLA's curriculum in developmentally friendly ways.

Specific resources for Grades K – 6

Specific resources for grades K-6 include one of the best phonics programs available today as it offers a unified language arts approach for all learning types. Beginning in kindergarten, students will study mathematics Singapore-style using a math curriculum entitled Singapore Math. For years Singapore students have led the world in math scores. With Singapore math books, American students have the opportunity to study mathematics in a successful way, which utilizes many classical techniques. CWLA utilizes resources from Memoria Press, Veritas Press, Apologia, Rod and Staff, and A Beka Publishing.

Starting in Grade 1, students will really enjoy learning Grammar with the Shurley Method. Shurley Grammar employs many jingles that are presented in a simple, easy-to-use format that can be sung or chanted by students. Rhythm, rhyme, and movement are effective ways to learn and retain both new and old information. Jingles help students begin the writing process by teaching them the definitions for the eight parts of speech. These definitions help students learn the vocabulary necessary for understanding basic sentence structure.
